Sometimes you just can't win.

Starbucks is not one of my favorite places. Their coffee is over-priced, and as for taste, I honestly would rather have a good old cup of Maxwell House. Plus I don't care for some of their political and moral stands.

That being said, sometimes you just can't win. Starbucks provides employees who work 240 hours in a quarter (about 20 hours a week) medical, dental, life and disability insurance. Sounds like a pretty good deal for some kid who just graduated from high school. And now they have a scholarship program to help supplement educations for those employees.

But Joshua Lane of North Dallas thinks that's not enough. He says, "I find it unusual how Starbucks would pay for its employees' college costs when it could have offered a higher wage that would improve employees' finances." Josh doesn't think a college education will "improve employees' finances"?

I guess Joshua has never heard the adage, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for today, teach a man to fish and you feed him for life." Besides all that, why is what Starbucks pays their employees any of Joshua's business?

"How about a salary boost instead?" The Dallas Morning News; June 19, 2014; p. 12A.
