The whole world is crazy!

Mexico says Arizona's new law is unconstitutional and has asked a federal court to overturn it. Their citizens' rights are at stake, they say. I wasn't aware that Mexico was an authority on our Constitution. And even if it is, what right have they to comment on our state laws? They don't let Americans live in Mexico without proper documentation. And if they're really worried about the rights of their citizens, they should tell them to stay at home and quit breaking our laws!

Well if you're gonna' be picky . . .

A high school teacher in one of our local school districts was arrested this month on several criminal charges. She's had intimate relationships with several of her male students (translation: statutory rape). She's pretty much admitted that she did everything she's accused of. Her lawyer says she has been an outstanding citizen. Well, except for this sex with minors thing. I swear, some people are so picky!

Some Paris News funnies: There's an interview with Robert High in the latest issue of Paris lifestyles magazine. The writer of the interview says Mr. High was accepted at "McHarry" medical school in Nashville. It's "Meharry," dear. Wonder if their students wear McStethoscopes and perform McSurgeries? One of Mr. High's ancestors was a "black smith." That's quite possible since Mr. High is African American. But I think we're talking "blacksmith" here.

Mary Madewell recently wrote an editorial about how they often have to clean up grammar and word usage in letters to the editor. What a hoot. She should start with her own reporters -- Stephanie Norman writes: "There once was a young girl who's high school senior prom . . ." How would you like to be a high school senior prom? Then Stephanie says in an article about a seamstress, "She sews on patches and adds applicants to the legs or pockets." Ouch! I've never applied for a job where they sewed me to a pair of pants! The word, dear, is applique. In an article about a photographer, she repeatedly refers to her "Cannon" cameras. Shoot one of those n's out of there, honey. The Canon Company doesn't use two in the middle of its name.

See -- Essie's not crazy!

Back on May 2, I wrote about the stupidity of removing the ban on homosexual men donating blood. Part of the reasoning behind removing the ban is that our screening methods are just so much better now, that's it's virtually impossible for a slip-up to occur. I said that I certainly hoped I didn't have to have any transfusions.

Well, here's a little update. Federal health regulators have fined the American Red Cross for sloppy screening of donated blood. The Red Cross has been cited a dozen times since 2003. Yet the FDA says that the U.S. blood supply "appears" to be safe. I still hope I don't have to have any transfusions!

Oh, and by the way, Essie told you so!

Calling Sheriff Joe!

U.S. Immigration officials are making things nicer for illegal detainees waiting for hearings and/or deportation. They're going to provide them movies and bingo nights, continental breakfasts, access to self-serve beverages, fresh veggie trays, cooking and exercise classes, and holiday celebrations with family. No more jail uniforms, no more armed guards, no more razor wire fence. But there will be hanging baskets of flowers, new furniture, and new paint colors. They stress that this is only for those who have not committed a crime. Let's see, they're here illegally -- isn't that a crime?

In the meantime, they're trying to deport two sisters who were brought here as children and for 25 years have jumped through every hoop the INS has put in their way in attempts to obtain their legal papers. They've checked in when they were supposed to, filed all the paperwork, worked hard, and had children here. They are fine upstanding people married to American citizens, but if nothing changes, they're both being sent to Serbia before the end of July. I have a theory about that -- I think the Obama Administration is setting these women up as examples. When the public justifiably questions why these sisters are being deported, the Obamaites will scream -- "See, it's racial. You want the Mexicans deported, but not the white folks." And many ignorant people will jump on that bandwagon not being able to discern the vast differences in people who come here illegally, live off our tax dollars, and flaunt their illegal status and those who come here making every attempt to do things the right way, work hard, and abide by our laws.

Your tax dollars at work.

Get a Life!

Our church once had a youth minister who was always saying, "Get a life!" in a very condescending manner. I got really tired of hearing it. But when I read this story in the newspaper, it was the first phrase that came to my mind.

Shamica Neal is upset with Blanton Elementary School in Carrollton. The school librarian has been promoting reading at the school, and she has photographed children in various situations and posted the photos with the theme, "I'd rather be reading." Shamica's son was photographed with his head in a trash can as if he were vomiting. The photo shows none of his face, so I really don't know how anyone would know it was him unless she told them. Anyway, she says he was humiliated and emotionally damaged by the picture.

My question to Ms. Neal is this: If this photo was so humiliating and emotionally damaging to your child, why in the heck did you give it to The Dallas Morning News and allow them to publish it? GET A LIFE, Shamica!

Obamacare is kicking in!

PricewaterhouseCoopers reports that businesses that provide health insurance for their employees are facing steep jumps in medical costs next year. Deductibles will reach record highs. And doctors have taken a 21% cut in Medicare reimbursements. What that means is that people on Medicare aren't going to have anyone left to treat them as more and more doctors decide to quit accepting Medicare patients.

Now, Obama has issued warnings to businesses -- they can't pass on their costs to employees. "What we don't want is a massive shift of costs to employees," said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. The administration has arbitrarily instituted new rules -- a business can't drop coverage for a particular health problem, it can't increase the proportion of insurance paid by workers, it can't "significantly" increase deductibles or co-pays. That means we're going to see rising unemployment or higher prices or both. Companies have to make up that money somewhere, and most small businesses are already operating on a shoestring.

Essie May has just one word for all this mess -- REPEAL!

We can do what we want to, and you can't stop us!

The Dallas Housing Authority has acquired an apartment building in Oak Cliff. They plan to house homeless people from The Bridge there. The building is across the street from an elementary school. The homeless people to be housed at this location are alcohol and drug addicts and mental cases.

Mike Faenza, president of the homeless alliance, told the Dallas City Council that these people have "a right" to be our neighbors. But I notice Mike didn't put them up in his neighborhood. Anyway, the only people who have a "right" to be my neighbors are the ones who can afford the property next to me. Faenza says there's no evidence these types of facilities have a negative impact on their neighborhoods. I have to wonder, though, along with the people who live in this area, about who is going to oversee the tenants. And who will make sure they take their medications? And what will this do to their property values? Would you buy a house next door to a facility housing drug addicts and mental cases?

Unfortunately for the homeowners in the area, it boils down to this. MaryAnn Russ, the DHA president, said they have the required zoning and her agency doesn't need anybody's permission to go ahead with the plan. Nice lady, isn't she?

It's a Democrat thing . . .

In an article about Texas's state budget and the need for cuts, Democrats were quick to note that Texas already trails all 49 other states in government spending per capita. They think that's a bad thing. I think it's great, and it makes me proud to be a Texan!

I could have call waiting if I was a mooch.

Did you know that approximately 1 million low-income Texans get free cellphone service, including voice mail and call waiting? You pay for this through a tax on your cellphone bill. Heck, I pay for my own phone, but I don't have call waiting, and Mr. Essie May doesn't even have voice mail. The theory is that people use these phones so they can stay connected and get a job with them. How many do you think really use them for that?

Punish the offenders.

Tammy Greenberg of Dallas bemoans the fact that the City of Dallas is slashing its budget. She says there will be even fewer people to clean and maintain the parks which are full of discarded plastic bags. She wants to solve this problem by taxing plastic bags.

I have another idea -- instead of punishing responsible citizens by burdening them with yet another tax, why don't we just impose stiff fines on the offending litter bugs and use that money for cleaning the parks?

Too stupid to be parents . . .

Patrick Hale suffered a terrible tragedy. He fed his 23-month-old daughter popcorn, she inhaled the kernels into her lung, bronchial tubes, and vocal cords, and she died. I can't imagine how devastated those parents must be.

However, he and his wife are not taking any blame for feeding a food to their daughter that she was not old enough to handle. It's the popcorn company's fault. It didn't tell them popcorn was dangerous. Maybe the U.S. Mint better issue a warning, too -- don't let your toddlers put coins in their mouths. The manufacturers of peppermint and other hard candy better warn these ignorant parents, too. Pepper growers better start warning them that jalapenos and other peppers are too hot for their babies. Oh -- and beef producers -- "Don't feed your 3-month-old steak." And fruit growers -- "Remove apple seeds before feeding to your child." And just in case you didn't know, alcoholic beverages shouldn't be put into baby bottles.

I swear, some people are just too stupid to be parents.

But he's illegal!

Eric Balderas is a student at Harvard. The newspaper says he's "from San Antonio." But that's not right. Someone who is "from San Antonio" lives there legally. Eric does not. He's been in the country illegally for 15 years. He is, in reality, from Mexico.

And he may be headed back to Mexico. He was detained by ICE when he tried to board a plane in San Antonio using a Mexican consulate card and his student ID. He said this ploy had worked before, so he thought it would again. He said he used to travel on a Mexican passport until he lost it.

Eric attends Harvard on a full scholarship. Wonder which American citizen was cheated out of a Harvard education by that? Anyway, Harvard is supporting Eric. "Eric Balderas has already demonstrated the discipline and work ethic required for rigorous university work, and has, like so many of our undergraduates, expressed an interest in making a difference in the world."

But he's a cheat. He's dishonest. He's ILLEGAL!

But that doesn't matter much in our society anymore. Eric recently participated in "coming out" day. No, so far as I know he's not gay. It was a "coming out" day for illegals to flaunt their illegal status in the face of law-abiding citizens. Homosexuals and illegals -- next is "coming out" for murderers and rapists. After all, doesn't Jesus accept everybody?

Why?

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy says that "A state need not guarantee the offender eventual release, but if it imposes the sentence of life, it must provide him or her with some realistic opportunity to obtain release before the end of that term." You tell him, James!

I don't normally agree with James Ragland about anything. Mr. Ragland is a columnist for The Dallas Morning News. But he certainly hit the nail on the head with his June 9, 2010, column. In it, he takes Barack Obama to task for his crude language, specifically his remark about wanting to know whose "ass to kick" in the BP disaster. Mr. Ragland says he's going to start with Obama's.

Ragland says that words matter as does a sense of decorum. And that Obama, a Harvard graduate and the President of the United States, of all people, should know that. Not to mention the role model he should be for his two little girls. I wonder what kind of words pop out of their mouths. And if they talk about "ass-kicking," do Obama and Michelle correct them?

Ragland points out that Obama was not "chatting it up" on a Chicago street corner, nor was he engaged in a basketball game at the gym. He was participating in a formal interview in his official capacity as the leader of this country. Of course, we should have realized that he doesn't have enough sense to know that profanity is inappropriate when he laughed over Joe Biden's "big _______ deal" remark.

And then Ragland makes the point I thought was certainly obvious -- it was not a spontaneous remark. It was contrived and calculated and meant to pacify those who think he's not been angry enough over the oil spill. Hmmm -- contrived and calculated -- par for the course for Obama.

Just when you think you've heard it all . . .

The latest thing is to pay people on welfare to take their medicine. I don't mean paying for their medicine, but actually paying them everytime they take a dose.

"It's better to spend money on medication adherence for patients, rather than having them boomerang in and out of the hospital," said Valerie Fleishman, executive director of the New England Healthcare Institute. Chiquita Parker participates in the program in Philadelphia. She isn't married, but she has a child. She has lupus. She says she would forget to take her medicine or sometimes take two a day. She's "earned" $300 in the last six months for taking her medicine. She says she takes it regularly now. And you know what that proves? It proves she could take it properly before, she just didn't want to. So now we pay her to do it.

Essie May has to take several prescriptions, herself -- where do I sign up???

We could learn a bit from the Brits!

Starting in September, the spouse of a citizen who is coming from outside the European Union and wants to live in Britain will have to prove a basic command of English. The Home Secretary said that the new provision would promote integration, remove cultural barriers, and protect public services. Sounds pretty common sense to me. The U.S. should follow suit swiftly.

Thank you, BGCT!

I am so proud of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. The organization of Texas Southern Baptist Churches severed its relationship with Royal Lane Baptist Church because of Royal Lane's ordination of homosexuals as deacons. Finally a move that is not motivated by political correctness, but by biblical truth!

Barbara Wiskow disagrees with me. She says that a church is where Jesus stands with arms open for all human beings. Yes, His arms are open to all who come to Him in REPENTANCE! He never said, "Come on in folks, because in my church, anything goes." She says the BGCT doesn't believe that Jesus is big enough to encompass us all. Of course it does! It just doesn't believe that the church should be promoting what God has deemed an abomination.

Let's teach some morality along with the ABC's!

There was a recent article in the paper about a 17-year-old girl who graduated from Dallas Can Academy. She has a son who's 2 and a daughter who's 1. While I admire her for going ahead and getting an education, I wonder why she didn't learn her lesson after the first child. It's high time we start teaching our children that having sex and babies outside of marriage is IMMORAL -- not to mention stupid!

And speaking of teaching the ABC's, The Paris News' Krista Goerte says in an article about a French photographer who visited Paris recently, "Other examples of his photography is available on the site as well." I think Krista are a little grammar impaired.

I'm with you, Rand!

Rand Paul opposes bestowing automatic U.S. citizenship upon babies born in the U.S. to illegal parents. Rand said, "We're the only country I know that allows people to come in illegally, have a baby, and then that baby becomes a citizen." Manuel Perez-Rocha disagrees with Paul. He says enacting legislation to reverse this loophole is "immoral." Well isn't smuggling yourself into another country and living off the wealth of that land a bit immoral, too, Senor Perez-Rocha? Incidentally, could we see your papers?

I believe him!

If we are to believe Donald Andrew Bess's defense attorney, poor Angela Samota had far more than her share of bad luck one day in 1984. Bess is on trial for Angela's rape and murder. He admits he raped her, because there's incontrovertible DNA evidence. But he says he's not the one who stabbed her 18 times. His attorney says that police "jumped to conclusions" just because they found Bess's DNA on her. Bless her heart, to be raped by one man, and then have another unknown man come in and murder her after that.

Incidentally, Bess was in prison on another rape charge when the Somota case was reopened and the DNA match was made.

You predict . . .

Which one of these young women do you predict will have a successful, fulfilling life . . .

Cortney Munna
Cortney Munna wanted to go to the best college she could find, no matter what it cost. So she and her mother took out student loans to the tune of $100,000. Now 26 and a graduate of New York University with a degree in religious and women's studies, Cortney is outraged that she is expected to pay that money back. She wants to call a "do-over." "I don't want to spend the rest of my life slaving away to pay for an education I got for four years and would happily give back. It feels wrong to me," she said. Cortney and her mother say they had no idea they were overloading themselves. I think the red flag should have gone up when Sallie Mae cut them off and said, "No more. You have too much debt." After that, they got at least another $40,000 from Citibank "without thinking much about how they would pay it back." If Cortney doesn't understand "You have too much debt," it makes me wonder about the quality of the education she received.

Corissa Brown
Corissa Brown is a recent graduate of Newman Smith High School in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. She ranked in the top 10% of her class. When Corissa was a sophomore, her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and she has endured chemotherapy and other treatments in the intervening years. Shortly after her mother became ill, her father had quadruple bypass surgery. Despite having health insurance, the family's finances were strained, to say the least, and Corissa's college fund was wiped out. But her family wanted her to go to college, so Corissa and the family buckled down. Her mother said, "It made us think about the money and how we were going to do all of this." Corissa studied hard, took AP classes, and became an active community volunteer. She worked for Coppell Parks Department helping with festivals and as a lifeguard and swim instructor. Corissa's father says he doesn't want her to have to depend on anyone else for her future. I'm betting she won't have to. She's earned almost enough in scholarship money to pay for her four years at Howard Payne University to get a degree in Elementary Education. The family is taking out a loan to finance the rest. The Brown's say they believe in perseverance. Corissa says, "I feel like I can handle anything. I feel like Superwoman!"

Aren't you proud of our President?

Under the headline Obama unaware of backroom deal, the Associated Press reports that White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said, "He's not aware of the individual circumstances," when questioned about the reports that the White House offered jobs for candidates to drop out of the primaries. I think the headline is misleading, and I think the White House is playing games with what the meaning of "is" is. The headline leads one to believe that Obama didn't know anything at all was going on. What Robert Gibbs said was that he was not aware of "individual circumstances." I'm sure there might be parts of the conversations and deals that Obama kept himself out of, but I'm also pretty sure he engineered the whole set up.

Then there was his meeting with Arizona Governor Jan Brewer. He told her that the Arizona immigration law is discriminatory. If it is, then so is the law that allows police officers to ask for your drivers license when they stop you. He says that she's interfering with the federal government's enforcement of immigration policy. What enforcement? That's the whole problem. If the federal government was enforcing the law, Governor Brewer wouldn't have had to take this step in protecting her state. Isn't it too bad that he's the President and she's the Governor instead of the other way around?

Would you risk your life for a graham cracker?

People are so greedy and stupid. Last week, a Nabisco truck filled with Honey Maid Graham Crackers turned over on I-35E in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas. Hundreds of boxes of the crackers littered to roadside. TXDOT sent in a crew to clean them up. They didn't finish before dark, so they stopped with the intention of finishing the job the next morning. The next morning, dozens of passing motorists stopped on the busy interstate and ran across the highway to fill their cars with the tasty snacks. Dora Richards boasted, "I got enough for all my grandkids and my house."

I travel I-35E quite often, and I can tell you that it's a busy, dangerous highway. That these people would risk their lives for a box of crackers that didn't belong to them in the first place tells you a lot about what a greedy society we've become. And if one of them had been hit crossing the road, I can assure you that his family would have filed a lawsuit against Nabisco for putting temptation in his way!

Discrimination?

One of the new taxes in Obamacare is a tax on tanning salon services. Now, let's think about this. Isn't that a discriminatory tax?

Who uses tanning salons? People who have white skin. So, essentially, this is a tax based on skin color. And that, my friends, is prohibited by the Constitution of the United States. Of course, Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Kagan, and their ilk don't really care what the Constitution says unless it happens to suit them.

What's wrong with America (or North Mexico)

There was a tragic apartment fire in Cockrell Hill over the Memorial Day weekend. Three people were killed, and dozens lost their possessions. I feel sorry for all of them.

HOWEVER, I would wager that most of them are illegal. Most of them don't speak English, and they say they have nowhere else to go. One of the residents, speaking through an interpreter, said he hoped the Red Cross would help him find a place to live. See -- that attitude is a lot of the problem around here. If my house burned down, my attitude would be, "Gee, I've got to get out and find a place to live."

In this case, I suggest the Red Cross look first in Mexico for places for them to live.

Clifford T. Hilbert, Philanthropist

Clifford T. Hilbert says First Baptist Church of Dallas is an abomination for raising $115 million to build a new sanctuary. He says they are self-centered, prideful, arrogant, and greedy to be building a church when people are out of work and in need. He says they should be helping those people instead.

So I ask Mr. Hilbert how he knows First Baptist isn't reaching out to those in need. I have a feeling that they are a very benevolent congregation. As they say on their website, "Missions is a lifestyle." Benevolence is something they are already involved in. This fund-raising is above that. FBC is involved in street gang ministry. When's the last time you tried to show a gang member a better way, Mr. Hilbert? FBC is involved in literacy ministries. When was the last time you taught someone to read, Mr. Hilbert? FBC goes into jails, prisons, and juvenile facilities to try to help those people change their lives for the better. When was the last time you were in a jail, Mr. Hilbert?

I go back to the Old Testament. When God was instructing the Israelites on building the tabernacle, they were to spare no expense. Implements and decorations were covered with gold. The finest fabrics were used. The priest's garments were jewel encrusted. God placed a great deal of emphasis on the place where His people were to worship. Jesus, Himself, said, "The poor you have always with you." The only time there will never be hungry people is when we get to Heaven.

Now, here's the real crux of the matter, Mr. Hilbert. How much have you given to the poor this year? How many items have you bought that you didn't absolutely have to have? Shouldn't you have put off buying those items and given that money to the poor? As my grandma used to say, "What's good for the goose is good for the gander." So if what you've bought for yourself outweighs what you've given to the poor, then you, Mr. Hilbert, are a hypocrite of the highest order.

I'm OK with that - and I bet the Canadians are, too.

Deborah Canterbury of The Colony thinks she's being funny about the Arizona law. Instead, she just shows her ignorance. She facetiously says we must start identifying all the illegal Canadians in the state and "send 'em back." I agree 100% -- but it sure won't take long, because I'll bet you could count the number of illegal Canadians here on one hand.

How's that affordable health care working for you?

The government released an estimate in May that says that health insurance premiums will rise 1% on employer plans to cover the mandate for allowing adult children to remain on their parents' plans. Each dependent added to a plan costs $3,380. This means that a) the employees will see an increase in premiums or b) employees won't see the increase, but they won't be getting raises, and new employees will come in at a lower wage or c) companies won't be hiring any new employees, and may, in fact, be forced to let some go or d) prices for the service or product the company provides will rise.

And that's only the estimate for the expected increase on one mandate -- wait till we get the estimates for coverage for pre-existing conditions and no lifetime caps. May God protect us from any more affordability!

Essie May told you so.

Didn't I tell you way back there that Dallas' bright predictions for The Bridge homeless shelter just didn't stack up to reality? ("You owe me a place to live" posted May 21, 2008). Well, here's the update.

There's a restaurant building at 807 Park Street, one block from The Bridge, that's for sale. And it will probably stay for sale. If you're interested in seeing it, you'll have to step over the human excrement to get in the door. The police say that The Bridge is used as a base by criminals who prey on downtown patrons. Case in point: Linda Self was shot recently as she walked from the bus stop to her job at the AT&T Building. The assailant is an habitue of The Bridge.

Jay Dunn, the managing director of the facility with no rules, said he doesn't want to close the door on people "just because they have significant criminal histories." He makes it sound like that's no more serious than shutting them out because they don't brush their teeth. Good gracious!

Police records show a group of repeat offenders giving their address as The Bridge. The 24 people in this group have 505 arrests and 1009 offenses. I say, "Shut 'er down!"

Gag at a gnat . . .

I had a friend who caught a Southwest Flight at Love Field not too long ago, and they confiscated a jar of peanut butter he had in his carry-on. But the guy who had bullets in his was allowed to board a Southwest Flight in Oklahoma City. It seems they don't look at the x-rays until the passengers are already boarded, and they didn't even know which plane the man was on. He could have been in Dallas, Denver, or Chicago. Turns out he was in Denver. But I bet he didn't have any explosive peanut butter on him!
