Blows that theory out of the water!

Did you hear about the footprints they found in Poland? They have scientists who've "proven" evolution scratching their heads. These 4-footed animals seem to have been around millions of years before these theorists say they evolved.

Noted paleontologist Jenny Clack of Cambridge University says this kind of "blows their theories out of the water." She says it will force scientists to reconsider what it was that originally "turned fish into land lovers."

Well, I can answer that question for them. God made fish, and God made land animals. And somewhere down the line these learned scientists may discover that they all existed at the same time, give or take 6 days.

And, incidentally, God controls the climate, too. If He wants the globe to heat up, it will no matter what we do. However, it appears this winter that He's trying to show all the academic know-it-alls they're not nearly as smart as they think they are.

From Each According to His Means

Guess what's coming down the pike now? If you make $75,000 a year, and your neighbor makes $20,000 a year, and you both get stopped at the same spot at the same time exceeding the speed limit by the same amount, your ticket will be more than his.

It's not happening (to my knowledge) in America yet, but I predict it soon will be. Recently in Switzerland, a judge fined a Ferrari owner $290,000 for doing 60 in a 30. Germany, France, and Austria also base punishments on a person's wealth.

So to all the welfare moochers in America, go ahead -- do whatever you want. Your punishment won't be as bad as that bad old rich guy's.

What happened to civility?

I love a good joke as much as the next person, but I guess I'm just not up on what passes as funny these days. January 10, about 70 people got together and decided it would be funny to ride the DART train with no pants on. Evidently, this is part of some nationwide fad. If you remember, January 10 was in that weekend with the coldest temperatures we'd had in 13 years.

Anyway, authorities got wind of what was going on and warned them as they stood in line that removing their pants on the train was illegal. They did it anyway. When Brian Alguire was asked why he did it, he said, "Why not? I didn't have anything better to do today." What a sad commentary! I can think of a dozen reasons why not. And if he has nothing better to do, he is surely one lost soul!

Lusinda Kureir immigrated to America from Sri Lanka 10 years ago. She happened to be on the pantless train. She didn't find it very funny. "This is a good country. Why you do without clothes?" I couldn't agree more, Lusinda!

So do we all worship the same God or not?

One of the arguments you often hear for "tolerance" of other religions, especially Islam, is that whether we call Him God, Yahweh, or Allah, we all worship the same God. I've always said that was a crock, but now the Muslims are admitting it.

A Malaysian court recently handed down a decision allowing Christians to translate God as Allah. One Muslim said, "Allah is only for us." The ruling applies to Malay language Bibles and newspapers. The government contends that making Allah synonymous with God may confuse Muslims and mislead them into converting to Christianity, a punishable offense in Malaysia which boasts "freedom of religion."

So the Muslims are rioting and firebombing churches. So tolerant!

Darned if you do, darned if you don't.

School districts find themselves in a no-win situation. The Fort Worth ISD is being sued by Mackenzie McCollum. Mackenzie is 17 years old and pregnant. She plays on the school's volleyball team. When the coach learned of her pregnancy, he wisely benched her. McCollum's attorney says, "It's extremely sexist. It's ugly. They're really attacking her for being pregnant in the first place and choosing to continue playing volleyball."

But suppose they had allowed her to keep playing. And suppose she was hit in the stomach and lost or injured the baby. Guess who would be suing the school district then.

In McCollum's case, the lawyer said, she missed out on college scholarships because her coach kept her off the team. No, she missed out on college scholarships because she had sex and got pregnant. Teens need to learn that they shouldn't have sex if they're not willing to pay the consequences. And on another aspect, I can pretty well assure you that you and I will be feeding Mackenzie's child through WIC, Lone Star card, and other government handouts. Instead of worrying about playing volleyball, she should be worrying about how she's going to support that baby!

Go ahead and have sex.

Sex education classes that focus on encouraging teenagers to remain virgins until marriage are verboten under the federal budget signed by Obama. Critics of the classes say there is clear evidence they don't work.

Well, excuse me, but if teenagers are not going to abstain because they had a class encouraging it, what makes these people think they're going to use a condom because some teacher said to? If a teenager can't control those hormones enough to not have sex, he probably can't control them enough to stop and apply the proper protection, either.

And excuse me again, but if teenagers don't have sex, there's a 100% chance they won't get pregnant. Abstinence works every time. Condoms don't. And the major point is that the risk of pregnancy and STD's aren't the big reasons kids shouldn't have sex -- the big reason is that it's morally wrong and they're not emotionally equipped to handle it. Unfortunately, we're much too enlightened and PC to teach that!

Your Tax Dollars at Work

As a taxpaying citizen of the State of Texas, you've just been slapped with a $24 million judgment. And do you know what it's for? People who bought handicapped parking placards claim they shouldn't have had to pay $5 for them. The settlement is the largest the state has ever had to pay to settle a claim.

So who is the big winner in this case? Certainly not the taxpayer. Certainly not the original plaintiffs -- they've all died since the suit was filed. The people who bought the placards will get their whopping $5 back only if they apply for it. So who's left? The lawyers who brought the case profit by $3.9 million. And they wonder why people have such low esteem for lawyers!

Isn't she lovely -- and articulate!

The director of our local teen beauty pageant should have someone help her learn to express herself for newpaper quotes. She said of this year's contestants, "It is important that these young ladies know about the area in which they are competing to represent."

Kind of reminds me of a former Miss South Carolina contestant -- "Some ah U.S. Americans don't have ah maps and such like and South Africa and Iran and our education . . . . ."

So what - part 2.

I guess we're meant to feel sorry for this man, but I guess I'm just not a very sympathetic person.

John Dodds is 58 years old. He has been on SSI for 20 years. He also gets food stamps and Medicaid. In other words, you and I are supporting him.

John recently had a $1000 winning scratch-off lottery ticket. He received a notice from SSI that his yearly payments would be cut by $980. He gets $20. He says, "I'm sort of laughing about it, which is a lot better than crying."

SSI is not like disability. Social Security Disability is paid out according to your work record. You pay "premiums" on that disability every paycheck you earn. SSI is a "needs based" giveaway -- you don't have to have paid into the system to draw it.

So, just to clarify for you John, the taxpayers bought the ticket, so the taxpayers should get the payout. We're the ones who should be crying!

So what?

There was a recent study lamenting how folks on food stamps can't afford fruits and vegetables. Well, it's a little hard for us folks not on food stamps, too!

Anyway, this study said that buying fresh fruits and vegetables will eat up 43% to 70% of a low-income family's food budget. So what? It eats up my food budget, too!

I guess the only difference I see is that at the checkout, my cart usually isn't filled with soft drinks, frozen dinners, and junk food. My money was spent on fruits and vegetables and other nutritious things those poor people can't afford.

How about a revolutionary resolution?

The Dallas Morning News proudly posted their new year's resolutions in the newspaper. They said they would be pushing this year

  1. to create an economic develop corporation to guide redevelopment efforts in southern Dallas and to increase parental involvement in the lives of southern Dallas children.
  2. to identify funding for the state's 50-year water strategy.
  3. to reduce the state's greenhouse gas emissions with an eye toward losing the title of carbon dioxide king.
  4. to expand the region's rail transit network to ease congestion and provide options for commuters and to identify significant sources of new money to fund needed highway projects.

Gee, I'd rather see them pushing a return to some standards of decency and the election to public office of some people with integrity, courage, and fortitude. If we do that, then all that other stuff will fall into place. If we don't do that, then even if they accomplish their goals, it will be for naught.

Thou shalt not steal.

Did you hear about the goofball Anglican priest who has a solution to poverty? Father Tim Jones said that the poor of his congregation should steal from large chain stores. He encouraged them to not steal from small businesses.

Made me think back to WWJD. As I recall, when faced with a hungry crowd, Jesus fed them. He didn't tell them to go down to the Jerusalem market and pick a few pockets. Guess Father Tim is just too busy to try to do something about the problem himself.

How long is a lifetime?

How many years do you suppose one has to spend in prison for 10 life sentences? In Texas, it could be as little as 20 years.

Gilbert H. Escobedo admitted to raping at least 30 Dallas women as the ski mask rapist. Police suspect he raped many more. He was sentenced to 10 life terms in 1990. Guess what? He's up for parole. His victims recently received letters that he will be appearing before the parole board. "There's just not a way that we can give you any kind of odds to tell you whether he is likely or unlikely to be approved," said Gene Stewart, a Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesperson for the victim services division. And guess what else? Escobedo was already on parole when he committed all these atrocities.

One of Escobedo's victims says, "I know that if he gets out, it will only be a matter of weeks or months before he picks up where he left off." I fear she is right.

The Party of Compassion

Sheila Dixon, the mayor of Baltimore, is a Democrat, a member of the party of compassion. She was convicted last month of taking gift cards from a program intended for the city's poor children and using them to buy electronics, including an Xbox video game system, for herself. Sheila has also been accused of taking more than $17,000 worth of New York and Chicago shopping spree trips from a developer seeking city business -- a developer who happens to be her former boyfriend. He was indicted for bribery. Sheila's just like most members of the "party of compassion" -- they're only compassionate insofar as it benefits them personally. By the way, she is now the former mayor of Baltimore.

Is it just me, or is this woman nuts?

The City of Irving has contracted with Kraft, Inc. to stage a sort of party for the implosion of Texas Stadium. Ann Moody says she thinks the public spectacle is sad. I don't have any feelings one way or the other on the subject aside from the fact that our ancestors built structures to last for hundreds, some even thousands of years, and if they could do that, I don't see why we build them to last for only decades.

Anyway, back to Ann. Her real complaint is that Kraft is having an essay contest for children. The winning child gets to punch the trigger button to set off the implosion. My first thought was how much fun that will be for a kid. Heck, there are at least a dozen grown men I know who would jump at the chance to do that. But Ann says this adds to our "worrisome, growing culture of violence." She says, "We do not need a publicly sanctioned event that teaches children to glorify it [violence]." Can't you just see some car-jacker or rapist saying, "Well, it all started when I got to push the button to implode Texas Stadium. I got a hankering for violence right then."

Get a grip, Ann! You obviously don't know the meaning of violence. Now if we said, "Let's put a bunch of puppy dogs or kitty cats in there before we blow it up and see how far they fly" . . . THAT'S VIOLENCE. Or if a bunch of hooligans tried to blow up a building not slated for destruction -- THAT'S VIOLENCE. But punching the button to bring down a building that's got to come down? Would Ann call it violence if the thing were just bulldozed instead and they let a little kid sit on the bulldozer with the operator?

She says it's sad that Kraft and Irving are choosing to give kids the "momentary thrill of creating massive destruction." I think Ann's just jealous that they didn't open up the contest to adults.

Why It's Our Business

Homosexuals are fond of tossing out the misleading "What I do in my bedroom is not your business" argument. Here's one reason it is our business.

Did you know that effective January 1, 2010, all Texas pregnant women must be tested for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B during their first prenatal visits? Then, they must have a second HIV test during the third trimester. And why is there so much HIV out there? Because of what homosexuals and bisexuals do in their bedrooms. And who do you think will be footing the bill for a lot of this testing? We taxpayers who are already paying to rear a bunch of other people's illegitimate children.

And what about all the mothers out there who are married and in monogamous relationships with their own husbands? They're at a very low risk for these diseases, yet they're going to have to pull out the wallet to pay for tests they don't even need. And we're going to let the government control all our health care. Sheesh!

Paris News funnies (and I'm not talking about the comics page): Krista Goerta wrote last Sunday about the Herrmann Family who make artistic pieces from scrap metal. She writes, "Half of a gear becomes a paw, nuts and washers become a set of eyes . . . all put together will (sic) several dozen other odds and ends of metal scraps and viola! -- the 'Byron Nelson' as the family calls the statue of the golfer, is created." First, I'm not sure Byron Nelson had paws. Second, I wonder if Krista is aware that a viola is a flower or a musical instrument or a lady's name. I'm quite sure she meant voila. At least three times in the photo captions accompanying the article, she refers to "The Herrmann's sculptors," their "sculptors of people," and "the sculptors spread throughout the yard and home." Krista, Krista, Krista -- sculptors ARE people. Sculptors create sculptures. Were all your proofreaders on holiday last week?

Forget George Washington and Thomas Jefferson!

The Carrollton City Council is either afraid of being called un-pc or just plain stupid.

Due to decreasing city revenue, the city has cut services, laid off employees, raised fees, and cut funding for charities in the past few years. A couple of years ago, they cancelled the 4th of July parade. But this year when they were asked to sponsor the MLK parade, they said, "Why, sure!"

So they can't afford to honor our country's founding heroes, but they can afford to honor a plagiarizing adulterer.

Isn't it sad this is surprising?

Chandria Murphy of San Antonio lost a $6000 diamond ring at a mall in Great Falls, Montana. Jim Baroch found the ring and reported it to mall security. But the security guard Murphy approached about whether or not the ring had been turned in evidently didn't get the message. So Murphy ran an ad in the local newspaper. Baroch called her, and when she described it to his satisfaction, he returned it to her and declined her offer of a reward.

When asked why he had done it, Baroch replied "Why wouldn't you? It was her ring." So simple and so right.

Now contrast this story with the man caught stealing electricity from Oncor. When the policeman asked him why he didn't hook up legally, he said, "Why?" Some people have a moral compass, but it seems most people don't.

Sic 'em, Greg!

Texans and the rest of the nation should be singing the praises of Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott. He is joining with AG's from several other states to question the constitutionality of the Senate version of Obama care. At specific issue is whether it is right for certain states to be exempted from provisions of the bill just to insure their respective senators' votes for the monstrosity.

"If it (their actions) is upheld, then there really are no limitations in actions that Congress can take where literally they're taking taxpayer dollars from one state and giving it to another," said Abbott. I agree, but they've been doing that to individual taxpayers ever since FDR. We didn't say No loud enough to that, and look where we find ourselves now. Senator Nelson of Nebraska who got the payoff for his state attributed the outcry to "political opportunism and distortion." He should know!

What's wrong with this mom?

You know how cold it got in northeast and north central Texas this past week. On Thursday, there was some ice from overnight precipitation, and the temperatures dipped to single digits with the windchill at sub-zero levels. A mother dropped her 5-year and 7-year-olds off at Cannon Elementary School in Grapevine that morning. I guess she didn't notice there were no cars on the parking lot and no other parents dropping their kids off. I guess she didn't watch to make sure her little ones got safely inside the building. Because about 15 minutes later, Tiffany Shawhart saw the stranded children outside the school with cold red faces. She explained to them that she was a nurse and wanted to help them, and they eagerly joined her in her warm car. The children couldn't tell her their mother's phone number or where she worked, so Tiffany called the police. The police say this is not a bad mom even though she may face child endangerment charges. I say that's debatable.

He ain't no Annie Sullivan!

Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson says Obama is a "miracle worker." Who would have ever thought that one man could take over the United States economy the way he has? Who would have ever thought that an American President would release terrorists to go home and plot against us? Who would have ever thought that the Commander-in-Chief would prevent our military leaders from carrying out their mission by setting arbitrary deadlines? Who would have ever thought that Americans would be forced to pay for insurance they don't want or need not only for themselves, but also for those whose priorities are so messed up they don't take care of their own business? Who would have ever thought that the leader of the free world would bow to dictators and tyrants? Who would have ever thought that the one who should be the country's most patriotic citizen would count as his mentor an extremist whose philosophy is "not God bless America, but God d___ America"? Who would have ever thought that the President of the United States would deny our heritage and claim that we are not a Christian nation?

Eddie Bernice may call these miracles. I call them travesties.

Why Pedophiles Should Never be Released

Sarah Foxwell was 11 years old. She went missing from her Maryland home December 22. Her little body was found Christmas Day. She had been abducted and murdered by her aunt's former boyfriend, a registered sex offender. The conviction that compelled his registration was for an offense against a child. These people are never rehabilitated, and we see how much protection "registering" them provides. They should be locked up with no possibility of release.

I can solve this problem!

Dallas County is being sued by Chris and Carl Sempe. In 1990, their father was placed in a holding tank at the Dallas County jail. He switched the channel on the television. This evidently violated some kind of inmate protocol. So Darrell Keith Hartfield, a self-described "peacemaker," clobbered Sempe and killed him.

Dallas County could easily prevent liability for incidents like this. Take out the TV's!

Another Reason Not to Drink Around Your Kids

Besides setting a bad example, getting drunk in front of your kids is dangerous. Duke Lawrence Watrous ruined his family's Christmas this year. In fact, he probably ruined all the rest of their Christmases, because they will always be a reminder. Duke had too much to drink. He shot his 10-year-old daughter and killed her on Christmas Eve. Authorities don't think he did it intentionally. When police and ambulance arrived, little Ashley was on the dining room table where she was pronounced dead. It is not clear how long she had been there.

Last April, Duke was arrested on a count of injury to a child or an elderly or disabled person. Wonder if he had been drinking then, too?

Do you suppose the criminals will listen?

About 100 people marched in Oak Cliff recently to decry violence in their community. They carried signs saying, "Just say no to more killing," "Love each other," and other similar sentiments. While I agree that crime is rampant and something needs to be done, I question whether their solution will do any good. Does anyone really believe that some thug bent on knocking over a bank or killing or raping will look at one of those signs and have an "Aha!" moment? Maybe I'm just too cynical, but I just can't see that happening.

Their march should take place at judges' and parole board members' offices. Those are the ones who can do something about the crime rate.

More on how many chances should you get.

Lemondo Simmons kidnapped a couple from Dallas in 1992 and raped the woman. Another man was convicted of the crime and spent 16 years in prison. But then a DNA test cleared him. Because the statute of limitations had run out, Lemondo Simmons confessed to the crime. We had a chance to put him where he belongs again when he was charged with pistol-whipping his uncle on two occasions, but Judge John Creuzot let him go with 10-years deferred adjudication probation. That means he won't have a record if he completes his probation without getting caught.

Simmons told Judge Cruezot that he was trustworthy and did not need to be electronically monitored. Now I can understand him doing that -- what's he got to lose? What I don't understand is that Judge (and I use the term loosely) Cruezot agreed with him. When he kills someone, that person's blood will be on Cruezot's hands.

Then there's the case of Kenneth Brandon Bain. He ran over two people and killed them while he was DUI. He got only 2 years in prison. Of course, in Texas, 2 years doesn't mean 2 years. Anyway, Bain says he doesn't have a problem with drugs or alcohol. He said the accident was a "childish mistake." Life is cheap!

Stupid Criminals

This is a horrific story; however, it ends in a bit of poetic justice. An SMU student was abducted and raped by three men in December. They took her to the Fair Park area of Dallas, blindfolded her, and dumped her out of the car. Passing motorists saw her and phoned police.

Now here comes the poetic justice part. Her attackers have been arrested. How did they find them so quickly? The rapists used the victim's cellphone, and law enforcement was able to triangulate the signal and track them down. Incidentally, they are all three illegals.

How many chances do you get?

Harold Cornish used to work for the Dallas Police Department. In 1988, he was fired for sexual harassment, but the dismissal was later reduced to a 3-month suspension. In 1989, he was fired for disobeying a direct order, discourtesy and insubordination, but the dismissal was later reduced to a 5-day suspension. In 1999, he was fired for pulling a motorist's hair and lying. In 2003, he was hired as a police officer by the Lancaster ISD. But that was cut short by district policy that required the police chief to get school board approval before any hire. Cornish sued the district for discrimination and a hostile work environment and got the job back. In December, Cornish was arrested for beating one of the LISD students. It's unclear whether or not he's been suspended, fired, or had any other action from the district taken against him as a result of this incident. Wonder how many more chances he gets?

Wonder how bad you have to be to be sentenced to more than probation? Shirley Hughes and her daughter, Tammie Lewis, hired a man to kill her husband. The man turned them in. Here's the kicker -- the stupid husband took her back and they are now living together.

We don't care if you're corrupt.

Despite all the publicity about what a corrupt organization ACORN is, and despite the congressional vote to cut off all funding to ACORN, Federal Judge Nina Gershon has ruled that we must continue to funnel money to these crooks. December 11, Gershon said in her ruling that it is in the public's interest for the community group to continue receiving federal funding. I don't know about you, but I can't see how it's in my interest at all. In fact, I resent my hard-earned money being used to rig elections, teach people how to scam the welfare system, and provide covers for people bringing in underage illegals for prostitution.

ACORN claims that Congress' decision to cut off their funds was unconstitutional because they were punitively targeted. My goodness! Since when did it become unconstitutional to say we're not going to bilk the taxpayers for this shady operation? And maybe they wouldn't have been "targeted" if they were a legitimate group.

Awwwww - isn't that sweet?

I never thought I'd see the day, but I have to give Marion Barry a pat on the back. He's about as sleazy and crooked as they come, but he has taken a stand contrary to politically correct protocol.

The Washington, D.C. City Council voted on December 15 to legalize gay marriage. The bill passed 11-2 with two of the members saying, "I do," when called upon for their votes. Hooray for Marion Barry who rejoined with, "I don't," when his turn came around.

So we'll hear the old, "Why are heteros so afraid of gay marriage" argument again. Here's one reason. The Archdiocese of Washington said it might have to stop providing adoptions and other services because the law would force it to extend benefits to same-sex couples. We are going to hell in a handbasket!
