Essie May told you so.

Didn't I tell you way back there that Dallas' bright predictions for The Bridge homeless shelter just didn't stack up to reality? ("You owe me a place to live" posted May 21, 2008). Well, here's the update.

There's a restaurant building at 807 Park Street, one block from The Bridge, that's for sale. And it will probably stay for sale. If you're interested in seeing it, you'll have to step over the human excrement to get in the door. The police say that The Bridge is used as a base by criminals who prey on downtown patrons. Case in point: Linda Self was shot recently as she walked from the bus stop to her job at the AT&T Building. The assailant is an habitue of The Bridge.

Jay Dunn, the managing director of the facility with no rules, said he doesn't want to close the door on people "just because they have significant criminal histories." He makes it sound like that's no more serious than shutting them out because they don't brush their teeth. Good gracious!

Police records show a group of repeat offenders giving their address as The Bridge. The 24 people in this group have 505 arrests and 1009 offenses. I say, "Shut 'er down!"
