Your Tax Dollars at Work

As a taxpaying citizen of the State of Texas, you've just been slapped with a $24 million judgment. And do you know what it's for? People who bought handicapped parking placards claim they shouldn't have had to pay $5 for them. The settlement is the largest the state has ever had to pay to settle a claim.

So who is the big winner in this case? Certainly not the taxpayer. Certainly not the original plaintiffs -- they've all died since the suit was filed. The people who bought the placards will get their whopping $5 back only if they apply for it. So who's left? The lawyers who brought the case profit by $3.9 million. And they wonder why people have such low esteem for lawyers!
