How long is a lifetime?

How many years do you suppose one has to spend in prison for 10 life sentences? In Texas, it could be as little as 20 years.

Gilbert H. Escobedo admitted to raping at least 30 Dallas women as the ski mask rapist. Police suspect he raped many more. He was sentenced to 10 life terms in 1990. Guess what? He's up for parole. His victims recently received letters that he will be appearing before the parole board. "There's just not a way that we can give you any kind of odds to tell you whether he is likely or unlikely to be approved," said Gene Stewart, a Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesperson for the victim services division. And guess what else? Escobedo was already on parole when he committed all these atrocities.

One of Escobedo's victims says, "I know that if he gets out, it will only be a matter of weeks or months before he picks up where he left off." I fear she is right.
